Helsinki 08-23-08

On Saturday morning, we arrived in Helsinki, Finland. It sits on the Baltic Sea and is mainly a fishing port, with a lot of boats.

Everywhere you go, there are police! The squad cars here are drastically different from ours in the United States.

This is an area downtown that is just off of the bay. We walked through here to get to the bazaar on the waterfront.

This is the entrance to the underground subway on the waterfront. Some of the buildings here are very decorative.
We walked through this bazaar where they sold lots of vegetables and cooked food, along with paintings, wood carvings, clothing and tourist trinkets.

This is a large church about a block away from the bazaar.

The interior of the church is very ornate, with lots of gold artifacts.

Members of the church come and light candles in reverence for loved ones and the saints that they worship.
This is a guard, standing watch at the royal palace. I wonder if I can get my Chief of Police to let me have a shade umbrella when I’m on duty?

This is another church we visited near the downtown area. The walk up the steps was an arduous one and took a while to maneuver.

The walk was tiring, so a rest at the top was in order.

This is a pedestrian mall downtown where all the residents come to shop.

This is the entrance to Stockmann’s, one of the two largest department stores in all of Europe. You can purchase clothing, electronics, groceries, meals and just about anything you want in this store, which is outfitted with conveyor belts and is five stories high.

While we were walking through Helsinki, we came to a downtown park where a concert was being held. The group that was playing was Ladies First Big Band and was made up of all women, except for the two percussionists. We watched the concert for most of an hour and the band was great!

For lunch, Lynda and I decided to eat some local fare, so we dined on reindeer sausage. It was actually mild and very tasty.

On our way back to the ship, we passed a mansion downtown that appeared to be made of all marble.
